Family Hit in San Mateo Crosswalk Crash Raises Safety Questions

Family Hit in San Mateo Crosswalk Crash Raises Safety Questions
A strong showing was expected at San Mateo City Hall on Monday as community members called for action after a family was struck by a pickup truck while using the crosswalk at North Delaware Street and State Street. According to ABC7, Ramon Sandoval was walking with his 8-year-old and 16-year-old to a nearby Safeway when they were hit last weekend. The two children have since been released from the hospital, while Sandoval remained in the ICU.
The crash has intensified concerns about pedestrian safety in the area. Residents and advocates say the intersection has been dangerous for years and are now urging the city to move faster on safety changes. The city said it is pursuing near-term improvements such as rectangular rapid flashing beacons and shortened crossings, along with longer-term upgrades that include curb extensions, new curb ramps, high-visibility crosswalks, and daylighting improvements aimed at improving visibility near the crossing.
For many in San Mateo, this is no longer just a story about one collision. It has become a broader question about how quickly cities respond when families, students, and pedestrians continue to face risk at crossings people use every day.
Understanding Gov’t Liability Under California Law
There are a number of legal issues that arise when a dangerous intersection is the cause of a collision. One hurdle is showing that the city had “notice” of the unsafe condition. If residents have complained about this intersection previously, and there had been multiple other pedestrians injured in collisions, that will go a long way in proving the “notice” requirement of a cause of action for “dangerous condition of public property.”
